I just got back from a hunting trip to So. LA and I bought several bags of citrus. I tried my first blood orange-- don't know which variety--they are good and juicy, but not as sweet as the Naval oranges from So. LA.

The naval oranges are probably my favorite from there, they are very sweet and the peel is only about 1/8 inch thick compared to the 3/8 thick peel on commercial naval oranges we get in the stores here-- I guess those come from CA.

I also got a bag of Ponkan mandarins and traded some of those for some Page mandarins my hunting partner bought. I have to say, I think individual variability between fruits is greater than the difference between varieties. Ponkan may be somewhat more acidic or tart, but still sweet. I noticed that those that are greener seem to have less taste.

I have seeds from the mandarins and blood oranges -- are they true to type?

Yes, Mandarins 3-5 years from seed to fruit. Blood Oranges a decade. If you save $1.00 per day from the day you plant the Blood Orange seed until you eat your first fruit, you will have approximately $3,650.00 plus all the interest. - Millet
