Hi,

I was visiting my parents' house and noticed this on their citrus trees. Can someone tell me what caused this. The bark "skin" look like it's splitting. Thanks in advance.

It is probably freeze damage from last winter.

I've had some of those on my Mato Buntan at one point when the growth was extremely aggressive. It healed, and then I cut back on the N application and it disappeared. Of course we had occassional freezes too.

I get that quite often when the tree is flushing and we get a quick freeze. The sap inside the branch freezes & splits the bark. They heal over in time.

Whew......that's good to hear.

Thanks for your insight.

When I first saw the scars on the bark, I though it might be caused by an invisible pest.

So where in Norcal are you located?

Sometimes the diseases can get through those cracks, so I spray fungicide like copper during the wet winter months.

This is a good example of how this happens http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/29418?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared
We get a nice stretch of warm weather & then a quick night below freezing...

It's what happened to my trees after the freeze also. I didn't know what that was until now though. I did suspect the freeze on my avocado tree damage though. A big branch just fell down during the rain storm last week and it apparently broke at one of the "cracks" caused by the freeze. Upon looking a little closer, termites had also gotten in there and were munching away. Sad
