In the spring this year, I lightly pruned a seedling Morton citrange. A bit reluctant to throw the prunings away, I happened to glance at a nearby Choisya ternata shrub, known here as Mexican Orange Blossom. Apart from Poncirus, this is about the only woody citrus relative that is completely hardy in the UK.
So, I thought I'd try a couple of buddings from the citrange on to the Choisya. One died straight away, but the other has remained green for about 6 months. Sadly, the bud-eye itself seems to have been eaten by a passing snail, so I don't think it will ever grow, but it does seem to have some compatability. Next spring, I will try again.
Has anyone else ever tried cross-species budding or grafting of citrus?
The N. American species Zanthoxylum, a member of the Rutaceae group, might be worth a try.

I've never heard of any success (or attempts) with Zanthoxylum, but citrus is at least temporarily compatible with Severinia and Murraya. Also, Clymenia has been used as an interstock for dwarfing.
