im curious as to how long and how most of you store your fruit, I know everything you read online says fruit last 2 weeks as an average.

with the winter storm that hit on January 7th? I pulled most of my fruit that were left on my grapefruit and tangerine trees. I put them everywhere I could in the fridge, not just the crisper. here we are well over 2 months later im still eating fruit. what gives? yea I realize there is some loss of flavor, and im sure theres loss of nutrients, but other than one bad tasting grapefruit ive had well over 40 that were fine, with none loss to mold. the tangerines have probably lost more flavor and ive definitely lost 25% or so to mold, but ive got a few left out of 200 that are still good.

im just wondering if that's the normal or if under the right circumstances I can get more time out of them, to make it worth buying another refrigerator. im mostly looking to extend my season from may into the summer for the grapefruit.

thx

I have always heard that citrus last better in a plastic bag in the frig. I think that keeps it from drying out. I'd check very often for the mold. Hence one apple spoils the bunch. Same with mold on citrus. Tom

i would have thought differently, most of the tangerines that went bad were in a walmart bag, the moisture in the bag led to the mold. might be different for different fruit, but seems to me citrus might prefer it dry

I've seen more lemons and Satsumas dried out than moldy. Those green plastic bags don't seem to make any difference than regular plastic bags. Bags of Grapes usually come with small holes punched in the plastic bags and they will still mold. It might be a good idea to dry each citrus fruit off a day or two after they have cooled off in the frig. I'd think there was some condensation from household temp to lower temp in frig.

yea I know it isn't optimal, but I had to carry them in something. I actually borrowed the grandmother in laws spare fridge around the corner. I took most out after they started rotting, and still the grapefruit were fine either way
