On a recent buying frenzy i bought more plants than I have planting area left. I have an extra "page" that is still very small. I was thinking about grafting it to my satsuma but I want to be positive it will take. I don't want to take any chance of losing the "page" since it took me quite a while to find them. I was thinking of doing an approach graft instead of trying a bark graft or t-bud since I have only had about 75% success with those types of grafts. Will approach grafts work well on citrus? I know it is probably not the most efficient grafting method but I have had 100% success with it on my tropicals. Even my mangosteen approach grafts seem to have taken. Thanks. |

I would just find a limb on the tree you want the graft on and cut a bud or two from your other tree and tbud it. It shouldn't jepordize the tree. On the other hand approach grafts do work for hard to graft species. |

I plan on doing some grafting this Spring. I've done T bud, whip & tongue, & bark but what is approach graft?
Joe Real has done some very good step by step instructions on several grafts. _________________ Patty

I have grafted Page to Lisbon Lemon and to Ponkan Mandarin--both using bark grafts and both took easily. _________________ Skeet

I'd like to see those pics. I think they use approach grafting in bonsai culture because some of trees that they use like coniferous trees are harder to graft the usual way. |

I've done several approach grafts on citrus. You need to be sure that the graft has taken before cutting off the scion from the mother plant. I've lost a few for that reason.
This an approach graft with an albino sudachi and a normal sudachi.

Better late than never:
As terry said the graft point is very weak. You better wait several months before cutting the mother branch and enforce the graft with a piece of bamboo like on the picture.
It is lemon on PT.
