I learned from the good people on this forum, to spray my plants with soapy water. Regular dish washing soap works best, and it works really well. I use 2 tea spoons of regular Dreft dish washing soap in one liter of water.

Spray your plants toroughly, both top and bottom of the leaves.

I check my plants dayly, and whenever I see evidence of mites, I will spray again. After spraying a couple of times, all mites are virtually gone. Keep checking though, as sooner or later they will show up again.

Mostly the same as above, I use a spray of one tablespoon of Dr. Bronner's castile soap in a gallon of water. I usually wash off the plant with water and then spray the soap mixture every day until the mites are gone.

Edit:
Just to be clear I wash and spray the plant every day. I'm not sure if soap build up could be a problem, but I figure it's better to avoid the issue altogether by rinsing off the plant.

So the dish soap solution kills them??? Or does it just run them off-- to get on other plants?? What about the eggs??

Well, whenever possible I move the plant outside to spray and then haul it back in when the spray's dried. If that's not possible (for example there's a half foot of snow on the ground) I use a hand held spray bottle. However, soap water does go every where, I usually just wipe up any excess when I'm done.

Edit:

Fred

The soap kills them. It suffocates them, and I don't know about dish detergent but castile/insecticidal soap also washes away a protective coating on the bug, and it starts leaking fluids. I think that it get eggs too, but I'm not a 100% sure on that.
