I was pruning all my deciduous trees today, with some help from one of our very knowledgeable CRFG members from the San Diego chapter, and he asked me if I had an Allspice Tangelo in my citrus collection. I don't, and I wonder if anyone has this cultivar? Tom had a lot of great things to say about it, and stated it has a very unusual, spicy flavor. I'd love to add this to my citrus collection, but I can't say I've ever seen one for sale, or even in a yard, here. And, no budwood available from CCPP, either. I am hoping I can find either seeds or better, a tree. Anyone familiar with this particular cultivar? _________________ Patty S.

Hah, I saw that photo and blog, too, Laaz. He's way up in Davis, which is N. Calif., but it does look promising. I will check with Tracy Kahn when I go up for Citrus Day, and also during my grafting class, too. Maybe at least I'll get to taste them at Citrus Day, if they're still any fruit on their Allspice tangelo. _________________ Patty S.

Well, it's an old, old tangelo, according to UCR Citrus Variety Collection, it was developed by HB Frost back in 1917. So, it's probably been eclipsed by other, newer varieties that probably had some more appealing attributes, like the Minneola tangelo, which is bigger and easier to peel, and grows well in many different areas. The hunt is on. _________________ Patty S.

Yup, found that link, Sanguinello, but Surprise, AZ is quite a drive from me. About a six hour drive one way. And, think we're moving out of Allspice season, as they're a mid-season tangelo, probably ripe at the end of December I would think, from what I'm reading. Guess I could try contacting them to see if they would be willing to send me seeds? I suppose it's a "no if you don't ask", lol. Thing they're kind of an old mom & pop operation. No web site. _________________ Patty S.

Next time I talk to Gene, I'll see if he'll send you a budstick. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Very good point, Sangiunello. Maybe one of our Phoenix, AZ members might be willing to make a trip and collect some Allspice tangelo seeds for me! And, have a fantastic citrus visit, too. The history of that field is very interesting, as it was once a research station for the University of AZ:

I did email James Truman to see if he would be willing to send me seeds. He may be too busy during his open season, but certainly worth asking. They have over 50 different citrus varieties, so it would be a fantastic trip for one of our forum members in the Phoenix area. I guess he's a bit of a "citrus guru" in that area, too. I was actually supposed to be out in the Phoenix area in a couple of weeks, but plans have been cancelled, unfortunately. So, no Phoenix trip for m _________________ Patty S.
