I want to plant a citrumelo (that I currently have in a pot) on the side of a building, but I just found still live roots from a walnut tree growing through the spot where I wanted to plant. The walnut tree was cut down several years ago -- it was maybe 4" in diameter at the time -- but I never took the time to completely kill it, so it's been stump sprouting every year since. Does anyone happen to know about citrus sensitivity/tolerance to juglone?
Thanks! |

If I remember well the juglone doesn't come from the roots but drips from the leaves. |

I have a P.T. seedling that has been in the ground between two huge black walnuts for at least 2 years now and it has quadrupled in size. I plan on planting 4 more trifoliate hybrids between two large walnuts this spring and see how they do. The walnut tree roots carry the most juglone and can kill many plants even 50 feet from the walnut tree and beyond its dripline. I have killed many plants that are supposed to be juglone tolerant. so far the P.T. looks OK. |

I also have a couple of PTs planted within 15-20 feet of a black walnut.
They seem to be ok, but growing slower than others in different parts of my property. Of course there is all kinds of variables so I can't say if their growth rate has been effected specifically by the Walnut or not.
I have an Oakleaf Hydrangea , a Crepe Myrtle, Irises, and other things growing directly under the walnut, so obviously some things are unaffected. |

Thank you. You made me learn many things.
Reading on the net I discovered that what have been taught to me nearly forty years ago about juglone is completely deprecated. |

Squirrels tend to use my citrus tree pots as a stash for collected walnuts. And in the next spring, I have a lot of walnut seedlings in each pot. But I see no problem with my citrus plants. |

Yes I have the same problem, but they dig out my seedlings hiding their nuts. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...
