Anyone know where to get a 3-5gal Gold Nugget grafted on Flying Dragon? I've been looking online and the only place that I know grafts it on FD is out of stock for at least the next several months (Bayflora).
I know Four Winds has them, but they are not on FD.
Thanks |

No, Four Winds trees are not grafted on Flying Dragon. But they are grafted on a rootstock called Cuban Shaddock, which is also a rootstock that produces a dwarf tree. In fact trees grafted on Cuban Shaddock are called "True Dwarf". I must have at least a dozen or more citrus varieties growing as container trees grafted on the rootstock Cuban Shaddock. It makes an excellent rootstock for container culture, and further it makes an excellent tree. You will not go wrong buying your tree on this rootstock. Anyway, most any citrus growing in a container will be dwarf, just because it is containerized, no matter what rootstock it is grafted on. I also have a few trees grafted on Swingle in containers and they are about the same size as the FD trees. I can highly recommend trees from Four Winds on Cuban Shaddock. - Millet |

Thanks Millet,
I apologize, I should have made it more clear. I'm planning on planting it outside, I believe FD is the way to go for this, excellent cold-tolerance and a relatively small tree size, which will help greatly with winter protection.
Also, I'm not 100% sure that Four Winds uses Cuban Shaddock for their mandarins, although the do use it for many other varieties. I called them to inquire about the rootstock on their Gold Nugget. The person I talked to said that their mandarins were generally grafted onto some type of Poncirus hybrid (they couldn't give any more specifics other than it definitely was not on FD).

Gold Nugget is a late mandarin. They ripen in March so will have to come through you freezing winter. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Yes, that is exactly my plan.
If I can overwinter the fruit I hope to have mandarins in late spring/early summer. I know Frank_zone5.5 in central Massachusetts has been able to overwinter fruit on his in ground citrus, so it should be possible. My in ground citrus will more or less be inaccessible during winter. I want to use only very early (e.g. Early Satsumas) for harvest hopefully by late Oct., and very late varieties that hold well (e.g. Gold Nugget), or varieties w/ multiple harvests (Eustis Limequat, etc...) for harvest in late spring/summer. |

Laaz thanks for the offer. If no one knows of a source for with trees available for immediate delivery, I'll probably just wait until Bayflora's trees are ready later this summer (hopefully). They are currently waiting for them to grow out to ~5 gal size for sale. I'm just too impatient... I'd like to have it here and planted yesterday. Besides, I think I'm already going to have a car trunk full of your grafted trees on the drive back from my southeast vacation this summer. |

Thanks Millet, I have not tried Harris. I did not see Gold Nugget listed on their website. But then again, they don't have Dekopon listed online either, even though they do have it available.
I also saw have the 9 pound lemon... I have not seen that for sale online anywhere before.
Unfortunately their website has been down for the past few days.
www.harriscitrus.com/
I'll have to dig up their phone number and call on Monday. |
