Two questions:
1) Does anyone know the most common varieties of pummelo commercially available in Florida? I've seen three, one labelled Starburst which is pink and often of gargantuan proportions (I weighed one at the grocery the other day at 6 lbs - mighty pricey at 3$/lb), and two others that are somewhat smaller, one white, one pink.
2) Has anyone ever tried a Monarch tangerine? CeeBee's citrus claims to be the only source in the U.S.
Thanks! |

Gosh, that pummelo sure sounds like a Chandler to me. Mine are probably at least 2 to 3 lbs. Not 6, but my tree is still pretty small. They can get huge. And, they're really excellent. _________________ Patty S.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to buy a Chandler and compare, right? |

Absolutely, and exceptional addition to anyone's dooryard orchard line up. I love how it tastes, a sweeter version of a grapefruit. Much better in my opinion, but then, I prefer sweeter citrus _________________ Patty S.

I just tried a Sunkist "Red Pummelo", which fits the description of Chandler pretty well - large, globose, bright almost canary-yellow rind, very thick albedo, adherent peel, bright red flesh, and very sweet. It was fairly juicy for a pummelo. It may just be a difference in growing conditions, but I would guess the ones I mentioned earlier were a different variety - larger, slightly flatter, drier flesh, thinner albedo, less adherent peel, duller rind and flesh color. |
