Any experience with C. Macrophylla rootstock vs. C-35 for a container tree? I know the C-35 is semi-dwarf. I am looking at a lemon on either one of these rootsocks. I assume the container would limit size anyway.Any other opinions on this topic such as growth, production, quality, etc?
Thanks |

Trees budded on C. Macrophylla are vigorous, with outstanding yields that many times exceed the yields of other rootstocks. It is a very important rootstock for lemon varieties and is also recommended as a rootstock for Minneola and similar high-acid citrus cultivars. C. Macrophylla would be a good choice. I currently have several trees growing on C-35 rootstock. My Owari Satsuma, which is grafted onto C-35 is doing very well, with excellent growth. However C-35 does poor when the growth medium has a high pH, or high soluble salts. Ii is supposed to be excellent against foot and root rot. Other rootstocks to consider are Volkamertana and Rough Lemon. I have several trees on Volk, that Laaz gave me and they are growing strong. Because Volk is very vigorous, and usually produces a large tree, time will tell how it performs in a container. - Millet |

Thanks Millet-
Sounds like either would be fine. I was wondering if the macrophylla was too vigorous for a container? Any speculation as to whether prduction would be any better than C-35 in a container? I also have an Owari and Meyer on C-35 and they are both doing well.

The C. Macrophylla is vigorous as a graft as well. I have two variegated C. Macrophylla that I budded to swingle rootstock. They are by far one of the fastest buds I have ever done...
This was budded in June to swingle rootstock. |

I'm not 100 percent sure about container culture of C. Macrophylla, but I would think that it would be OK. Just being in a container would give the tree a lot of dwarfing. I think either the C. Mac. or the C-35 would be good choices. Grow both a Lisbon and a Eureka Lemon that way you could use both rootstocks, and evaluate them.. - Millet |

Good food for thought. Maybe a comparison is in order. Another nice variegated tree laaz. It must be a challenge to find all of those varieties! |

Now that I read Laaz's posting above, I am not sure whether the trees that I got from Laaz were on Volk or Swingle. Laaz which rootstock is the BC-1 and the V. Etrog on? - Millet |

The BC1 is on swingle. The Etorg is a rooted cutting. |

Thanks Laaz. I must be getting Alzheimer's, as I knew that you rooted the V. Etrog for me. - Millet |
