I don't use any mulch under my citrus trees. I do buy a couple bags of composted cow manure that I keep in the bag near each tree as a quick way to bank the tree in case of a hard freese. In the spring after danger of freeze is over, I dump the bags around the tree.

If you do use mulch, keep it a foot away from the tree since it can cause root rot.

Thx skeet I'll go ahead and neglect the mulch. I will compost in the spring then, should I also fertilize at that time? I use the vigoro fertilizer how much should I use if I do.

I use plenty of pine bark mulch with no problem even around the trunk. Rootstock is sour orange or trifoliate. I fertilize in the spring.
