I live just north of Los Angeles, where frost is a bit of a rarity but we've been getting more than our share of it lately. Last night, the lowest temperature I saw was 38 degrees but today, all of the newer growth on my orange trees is looking pretty frazzled. It was suggested that I cover them as best as I could with plastic bags (they're smaller trees), which I did, but it was quite a bit of work.

The daytime highs are still in the upper 60's and lower 70's so I'm thinking that the bags probably need to come off during the day so they don't bake? What do you guys think?

I don't like covering with plastic, cloth or fabric seems to protect the tree much better to me. I would take the plastic off during the day, but you can buy a materail called "frost blanket" which can be left on indefinitely without harm.
