I grew up with this lemon tree in the back of my parents house. It produces lemons the size of a large softball to a small volleyball. Does anyone know what variety it might be? We've always thought it to be a novelty having lemons this big, but the rind is a good inch thick in most cases.
Thanks,
Phillip |

Philip, the Ponderosa Lemon, also known by the nickname the American Wonder lemon, originated in 1887, as a chance seedling planted by Mr. George Bowman, of Hagerstown, Maryland. "The Ponderosa in general most nearly resembles the lemon, but the size of the fruits, the number of segments, the character of the tree and the foliage suggest relation to the citron." The tree was first sold to the public by the Schmidt & Botley Nursery, Springfield, Ohio in 1900. Much of this information was taken from the book "The Citrus Industry Vol. 1. - Millet |

Shirlee, try the cross and let us know. Everything grows bigger in Texas. Also, I checked out the temperature link your thread provides. Today at 12:45 the temperature at your location is 55-F, here 18-F. Take care. Millet |
