About 18 months ago, I have grafted a miho wase satsuma unto my owari satsuma. I have good amount of fruits this year on the grafted branches. Here are the characteristics:
1. Fruit size is double to triple volume than that of Owari Satsuma.
2. Sweeter than Owari Satsuma, but the same juiciness.
3. Peels easily like the Owari Satsuma.
4. About a month earlier harvest than Owari Satsuma.

As soon as I can borrow camera, will take pictures tomorrow when there is still light when I get home.

Miho Wase is now the first one to be harvested this season, not counting the lemons, limes, *quats, calamondins which bear fruits year round.

Wow, that's a winner.
Since it is an early Satsuma, it will get a good price in the market.
Since it is bigger than Owari, it will get a better price.
Miho Wase Satsuma is sure to be a commercial success. Surprised
And sweeter that the Owari. Now I want one too.
...
There, I have added it to my list.
Thanks Joe for testing out this cultivar and reporting on it for us citruholics.

Here is its description in the New Zealand Germplasm Collection:
"Miho (Miho Wase) is a nucellar seedling of Miyagawa selected in Japan in 1940. The
fruit are somewhat more oblate than Miyagawa, but higher in sugar, usually lower in
acid, and earlier in maturity. The tree is also more vigorous. Miho is the most popular
early satsuma grown in New Zealand."
So it is only new to me.

I'm glad that I have confirmed it in my yard. Yes the low acid is a very slight setback, but don't blame me, Very Happy I'm used to like the sourness of northern California oranges. But overall, this is a better Satsuma for me than the Owari.

Harvested today:

Front row left to right: unlabeled (cannot read the worn out label) Mandarin, Owari Satsuma, a penny for comparison(sorry, can't find a quarter at the moment), Miho Wase Satsuma. At the back: Rio Star Grapefruits. On the far right are fruits from Benny's Fuji Apple grafted last summer, a Chayote, and smyrna quince (that one is really big, you are seeing the tip of the ice berg, it goes to about 2 lbs each).

I have a pretty large miho satsuma tree. I topworked it to miho from an unknown variety in spring of 2003. Within one year the tree was just as big as before. Miho is the most vigorous satsuma tree I have. It is also early and one of my favorites. This is the first year for a lot of fruit. Most was puffy.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but how is the taste with the Miho? I found one today for $30.

This year the taste of Miho is better than last year, and is really good. Miho Wase generally lacks some acid (or "zesty flavor") that us Californians are used to. While it tasted better this year, the Owari Satsuma had a revenge and tasted better than Miho because of Owari Satsuma's more balanced flavor in terms of sweetness and acidity this year.

It is interesting to note that some years the Miho tasted better than my Owari, of course, grafted on the same tree.

Joe,
Here's # 5 for your list.
#5 less cold sensitive.
Winter before last (07/0Cool we had a sudden drop in temperature from being in the 70's and 80's to about 18 to 20 deg. The conditions must have been just right because it kill most of my Satsumas. Except for Brown Select Satsuma and Miho Wase Satsuma.
They both showed no ill signs or die-back even though many were small new grafts. The cold snap didn't stop them from fruiting that summer. Some of the dead satsumas were up to about an inch in diameter.

I agree the Miho is excellent. Also the Seto produces very large fruit and also very good flavor. So far I haven't found a satsuma I don't like. I think my Miyagawa is the sweetest of the bunch but the fruit are not as large... Bonnie sent me a load of different satsumas a few years ago, and every one is really good. The EF satsuma is also extremely good.

Ok, you guys have talked me into it. I am going to get it tomorrow. For $30.00, I do not think I could go wrong? They also have a mandarin orange. I am wanting to say it was a Japanese name starting with an H.

Joe, When we meet again, can you cut me a branch of your Mijo Wase?
It looks like it is a nice addition in my yard.
