Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and I have a few questions on citrus grafting. We have a mature kumquat and tangelo tree in our back yard and we do not like the flavor of either citrus and intend on removing them in the near future.
Can either of these two trees be top worked with other citrus such as oranges and tangerines? If they can be top worked, I plan on getting some budwood from UCR.

yes either can be topworked to any citrus you like. |

Kumquat, for the most part do not do well on their own roots. I have even tried Thomasville as a roostock with poor results.
Tangelo I have never tried as a rootstock, maybe Dr. Manners will have info on that one.

Both are grafted trees. I am not sure what the original rootstocks are though. |

Then you shouldn't have a problem, top them back to the rootstock & re-graft.

I've had best luck topping back the major branches to say 3 inches in diameter say a couple feet above ground. I've had several stumps die when I cut them back to0 close to the rootstock. |

So far I haven't had a problem. I top them to the rootstock and cut the top of the rootstock at a angle. I then bark graft at the high side of the cut.

You can graft BEFORE you cut the old canopy off ... then you are on the safe side.
I don´t think you have to remove the old scion, just graft on the height you like the new canopy to be. |
