Planted these last January -Reed & Haas in water then in 4x14 pots . Am getting budsticks of Holiday & Little Cado from eyeker to graft.
Taken last June/July. Just pinched the tip of Haas (right) week before.
Taken today (it's raining outside)
Now 29 inches from soil, will pot them up to 3 gal. Notice the 2 branches on Haas. Could graft 2 diff kinds of Avocado - 1 on each. Maybe next year I'll have fresh avocados!!!!!!
Hope they take Oh yeah, how far up the trunk should I graft on the Reed? What would be the best type of graft...maybe cleft?Advice? Opinions? _________________ Patty

I cut 6 inches off the Reed (& am rooting it...just because) & did a whip & tongue graft of Holiday on it. Same graft of Little Cado on one branch of the Haas. Keeping my fingers crossed! _________________ Patty

Just over 6 weeks now & the grafts are still green! Should I not get my hopes up? Should I take the plastic bag off, & rubber band off the tape?
Thanks .....ooohh I'm excited! _________________ Patty

You could leave the rubber band on the graft until Spring time.
The rubber will deteriorate and break by then.
My clue that an Avocado graft has not taken,
is that the scion turns black. So yours are still good.
If you have them in the house for the winter,
you might want to leave the clear plastic bag on
to increase the humidity compared to the heated air
in the house. If in a greenhouse, maybe there is plenty
of humidity and the bag is not needed there. _________________ Tom Mortell |

Thanks Tom, it's in my sunroom where it is very humid esp at night & am. It's very cool - 50's or so at night, & will be colder to maybe upper 40's on occassion at night. Will this be bad for them? It will get up to around 60 or so during day.
Warmer outside these last couple days, so it's mid upper 60's during day for now. _________________ Patty

It was down to 52 degrees here last night, so those temperatures are OK.
Some varietires can take a few degrees of frost, when mature. A little
tree in a pot would be killed by any freeze at all.
Have you read the CRFG Fruit Facts about Avocado ?
There are many good hints aboput growing them and even suggestions
about variety choices. Root rot is the main killer of Avocados. _________________ Tom Mortell |

Thanks for the info Tom. Little Cado is leafingout so I took plastic off. Rubber band & tape is still on. Holliday on Reed stock recently turned brown..after 2 months of looking good! Well, I can always do another graft on it.
JoeReal said he has several varieties of avocado budwood, so I might take him up on that in spring if I still can. _________________ Patty

Those grafts all died so I tried again & they died too. I give up on that one. It's larger & in 6 gal bucket taking up room so I cut all the branches back in Sept. - hoping it would die, but they are all growing back. _________________ Patty
