I've read that most citrus plants grow true when grown by seed, but that not all do. Which ones don't?

The main three that do not come true from seed are :

1. Temple tangelo
2. Clementine tangerine
3. Shaddock, Citrus grandis (pommelo)

I was at the supermarket & picked up some tangerines that were delicious. I took the seeds for planting. The sign just said tangerines. Is this the same as clementine tangerine that you mentioned above? I don't want to waste my time in planting these seeds if no fruit will come. Thanks. Vinny

Vinny, in ALL CASES fruit will come from every tree planted by seed. There are many types of mandarins, so what you purchased could be anything. I plant clementine seed BECAUSE they produce fruit that don't come true from seed. Each seed will produce a one of a kind never seen before citrus fruit. The fruit might be better than the mother, inferior to the mother, and many times pretty much the same as the mother fruit. Most all mandarins produce fruit true from seed with the exception of Clementine and King, also Temple Tangor and pummelos do not produce true. - Millet

Millet. Thanks for your response. I'm going to plant them and see what happens. Happy New Year! Vinny
