Hi, i just purchased 2 dwarf lime trees online and they arrived yesterday. I read some forums and found out to do 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 sand, and 1/3 peat moss. That is what i did, but for some reason i dont think that i did everything that i could. What kind of plant food do i need to give it and how often? I live in wisconsin so im leaving the plant outside and bringing it inside the house in winter. If you can give me any information that would be great. thanks for your time.

You might find that your potting mix is too dense and does not have enough aeration for citrus. You need coarse ingredients to avoid depriving the roots of oxygen. Pine bark chunks, coconut husk chips (CHCs), very coarse sand, perlite, fired clay bits, or redwood or cedar shavings are often used to increase aeration in the rootzone and keep the roots healthy. Citrus are heavy feeders, especially of nitrogen. A 5-1-3 ratio of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potash is the ratio most often recommended here for containerized citrus trees along with a good supply of all micronutrients including magnesium. Both soluble fertilizers mixed with the water and slow release fertilizers in the container are very popular and effective. Virtually every question you might have about growing citrus in containers has already been answered in this forum multiple times so you can use the search function to find answers. I have found it to be very useful.

Yeah, what jrb said!

Curiously, what forum gave you that recommendation?

A medium made from 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 sand, 1/3 peatmoss, is in reality 2/3 peat moss and 1/3 sand, because commercial potting soils are mostly all peat moss. Adding sand could be good, or it could be harmful, depending on it size and texture. Jrb has given you sound advice. I would mix your present medium with at least 50 percent (or more) with CHC, or pine bark chips. Doing so will greatly reduce compaction, increase drainage, and raise root zone aeration. Good luck with your tree, and welcome to the forum. - Millet (926-)
