Bottom venting perhaps not sufficient during dormancy?

Hey everyone,

During the summer I put my citrus on the porch wall. I've noticed that underneath the containers there is always a moist spot, even if they haven't been watered for a week or so.
This can only be because there is no ventilation underneath the container because of the smooth surface of the wall as well as the containers.

This made me think that perhaps this could lead to a soil that is to moist, especially during the colder period of the year.
Do you think this could be a reason for root damage during dormancy and if so, in what degree would it be harmfull?

If I were you, I would put three or four evenly spaced bricks beneath the pot so the air can get to the drainage holes. And that should do the job.

Good luck,
Igor

In the warmer months it seems citrus don't really mind constantly mist soil, When cooler weather sets in root activity slows down and they can become damaged. What I do to help with this is bring the containers off the ground about 2 inches with small spacers, provide bottom heat at about 55F, allow good air circulation and use a soil mix that dries evenly.

I placed them on 2 wooden beams, keeping the center hole free for air. Smile

I've got some fancy pot stands on wheels, once the trees are brought indoors (unheated bright room). Laughing
In the frost free period of the year, when the trees are outside, I put couple of old, used bricks beneath the pots and they serve the purpose just fine.

Take care,
Igor
