I have an etrog, golden nugget mandarin, and improved meyer lemon tree that i purchased from 4 winds, and am overwintering indoors under a grow light.
I have heard conflicting opinions as to whether citrus in general benefit from manual pollination when grown indoors. The info card that came with the trees stated " some people enjoy manually pollinating"- to me that suggests that the folks at 4 winds dont believe that there is much point to this.
what do you guys think- is there a point? is there a different in the answer to this q, depending on the type of citrus? |

You can hand pollinate if you wish. Hand Pollinating certainly will not hurt, and "may" do a little good. However, it is not required to get fruit. - Millet |

So it is!
If one thinks that it helps, he/she should do, it won't hamr the plants.. but because of usually parthenokarpie of citrus is not neccessary, only a few mandarin types require pollination....
I am wondering how hand pollination should work on complete sterile plants, like Persian Limes _________________ Eerh, hmm, uuuh, oooh, just guessing |

clearly manual pollination wont hurt the plants and i realize it is not necessary to get fruit, but these statments appear to be off-point.
if manual pollination helps produce more fruit or better fruit, i would take the time and effort to do this. if it will not have a noticeable effect, i wont bother.
so what do you guys think. |

IIRC, Millet gave a very good information about the stigma to stigma chemical transfer that encourages setting of fruit and for me that is new, and perhaps somewhere in between zygotic and parthenocarpic setting of fruits. You can sacrifice one flower and dab it unto the other cultivars, making sure the sigma gets dusted by pollen or gets touched by the other stigma. Setting of fruits in citruses is sometimes amazing and you'll be surprised what you can discover or learn from others in this forum. Just keep an open mind. |

I long did hand pollination, and hoped for a better fruit setting, but I found, for my culture, nothing benefical. There was, in my opinion, not much more fruit set.... _________________ Eerh, hmm, uuuh, oooh, just guessing |
