Valencia orange genome has been finally sequenced. One of the interesting results is the finding that it is not simply a pummelo-mandarin hybrid, but its further cross to mandarin.

Not yet, for this different varieties of pummelo and mandarines should be sequenced. Sure, it will be possible in several years from now.

Thanks, ilya. A lot of mandarin in the background of the Valencia. This is very interesting. I'll be interested to see if the geneticists can ID the mandarins and the particular pummelo.

If these varieties of pummelo and mandarine still exist. The cross that generated a sweet orange took place at least 2400 years ago.

Good point, ilya. They may have been lost to the ages, since this probably occurred more than 2 millennia ago.
