HI everyone.
We've been having crazy amount of rain here in Auckland NZ in pre-spring. And i've just one week ago got my back yard landscaped and put in these raised beds made from railway sleepers. Only thing is the landscape guys put in some "garden mix" which when looking at it afterwards is very poor quality with some clay chunks and even gravel. I put in a couple of bags of compost to improve. But after some serious rain last night there is pooling of water on top of the soil. Any suggestions to improve the drainage? as i know the citrus require this.

Remove the soil from one corner place a piece of metalic sieve covering the corner and that will keep the soil away than fill it with a handfull of gravel .
And in the same side of the corner , from the outside, drill a hole in it so the excess water cand drain out of the raised bed without any soil to be washed out.

Good Luck

Another option would to just replace the soil with a better fast draining soil mix. This is what I would do because you will be dealing with this soil for the life of the tree.

I believe RyanL is absolutely correct. If those raised beds were mine, I would completely remove all of the present filler soil, and replace it with a soil that has three different size materials blended in, plus plenty of organic matter. Further, while you have the raised bed empty, I would recommend that you double dig the base soil, before refilling the bed.. Anyway, that is what I have done with my raised beds. - Millet (873-)

Thanks guys! I reluctantly dig up the bed this morning and mixed up a bail of peat moss, a bag of shredded bark and two bags of compost then dug deep down into the native soil. i then put back in the mix of all these items. Will let u know how it goes.
