Hi
So a while back I posted that I was going to try to grow (ok keep alive ) a Cal outside in Mass. The test was to see if I was successful and if so try this with cold hardy citrus like a Kumquat.
The Cal was planted in a cooler with heater cables (1, 100 watt) and surrounded by 3 buckets of water and covered with several layers of transparent plastic.
The coldest it has gotten this year (including this morning) is 5f, inside my "greenhouse" it is 44f.
I took a peak at the tree which is around a foot tall last week and the leaves were dark green. It looked better than all/most of my inside citrus ( ok this isnt so good).
In the spring I will take a picture and post it. I would have to say so far so good

Frank, are you protecting the tree all of the time, or only on occasion as the weathers dictates? I don't remember the location, is the tree planted near a south facing wall, or some other structure that absorbs the days solar heat?- Millet
