Hello all. can anyone give me pointers on why 2 trees, treated roughly the same way (except the kumquat is bigger, in a bigger container) would have vastly different fruit types?

The calamondins are tasty if not pretty sour, with developed seeds, wheras the first 2 meiwa I tried are pithy, and the seeds are shrivled/ not developed.

It is the first year ive had both, and the calamondin is a small bush, the meiwa is a grafted standard shape. Both in primarily CHC with a bit of potting soil mixed in.

Thanks for any insight!

That is aside from the fact that Calamondins really taste sour but zesty and peculiar aroma. Whereas, you can eat the sweet peels off the Meiwa kumquat, or the whole fruit except the seeds.

The pithiness and lack of juice could be an indication of some plant stress (most likely water, and could be caused by unseen root problems) during the fruit filling period. Or simply the plant is still too young for that cultivar to bear juicier fruits, the juices hasn't started really flowing yet, so to speak.

thinking of the Millet pot tests, the Miewa is in a black pot, whereas the Calamondin is in a white pot.....?

Time to get the spraypaint, methinks.
