So my first question is: is this a special type of clementine or is it just the Sicilian climate or earth that makes these clementines the way they are?

Its probably more the soil and climate that makes everything grown on the island very special: rich in taste. Fruit varieties and grapes grown in the volcanic soil around Etna are just remarkable for the intensity of their flavor.

What you are describing sounds like a fruit Sicilians call a "mandarancio" a cross between a Mandarin and an orange. They are larger than madarini and smaller than oranges. They have seeds and can be very delicious.

Hope this helps
