Is there a preferred method for irrigating young citrus trees? Would drippers around the tree better then a microspray that covers same area?

So far I have 10 acres of underground (8-inches beneath the soil) drip irrigation. Being in Colorado, I do not have citrus trees planted outdoors in the ground, therefore I am not watering citrus, but I am watering trees plus other crops. The drip system works extremely well. One advantage of drip, whether it is above ground or below ground, is that it can be run no matter how hard the wind is blowing, and being in the country this is important. Micro spray systems cannot. With strong wind, or no wind, a drip system places the water exactly in the same spot. One precaution, no matter which system you use, do not let the waer be applied directly on the tree, this will cause a lot of trouble. Micro-spray is used as one method to protect a citrus tree during a freeze. - Millet (Drill ANWR)

Microspray are popular here with commercial growers. The down side is it requires more weed control, there is a little more evaporation loss, it sprays the low branches especially of young trees less than 4 years old, and if you have a high dust area they build mud and stop working.
The up side is they cool the soil and air around them and the water works mulch into the soil faster.
I prefer drip and use a commercial grade, 2 gal per hour drip. I have one on each tree to start and added a second half way between the second year for roots to spread out more. You may need more depending on your spacing. I planted 7 feet along the row and grow the whole row as a hedge. This way I got better production the first 4 years and now the trees give each other more protection from sunburn which can be bad in our area.
Mulch still works into the soil, just more slowly than with spray and I almost never have any weeds at all. I do a tiny spot weeding about 2 times a year with a hula hoe.
