A friend of mine has been letting people pick his 5 acres of satsuma trees for free this year as the stink bugs ruined most of the fruit. There is still lots of fruit close to the ground that is good that the coyotes haven't eaten. I picked a few bushels the weekend before christmas. Tonight while I was having my daily satsuma feast(searching for the candy sweet half dollar size fruit first), I just happened to look at a few leaves I had inadvertently pulled off along with the fruit and discovered some varigated leaves! It looks like the budwood is still good after all that time in my refrig and I'll try chip budding tomorrow. Even more of a fluke is that I just happened to get the 2nd to last growth flush that makes the best budwood! The provenance of this varigated satsuma is legal as it is a bud sport of a Texas tree. I've seen some trees smuggled in from Louisiana.
This story reminds me of one BuddinMan told me about noticing a bud on a sunkist satsuma bought in the store, budding it, and it took. He called it his sunkist satsuma tree.
