This is kinda an odd question, but I'm wondering if anyone here is involved with professionally breeding new citrus varieties. The reason I'm asking is I've become interested in somatic hybrids and microprotoplast mediated chromosome transfer and I started wondering if anyone has used either of the techniques try making a hybrid between Citrus (or Poncirus) and Zanthoxylum Americanum in a attempt to create a more cold hardy citrus or rootstocks.

At the very least, it seems like it should be possible to make such a hybrid. I seem to recall reading somewhere that a semi-successful somatic hybrid was made between some sort of citrus and Curry Leaf Tree, so a Zanthoxylum/citrus hybrid should at least have a chance of surviving.

Dr. Jude Grosser has made somatic protoplast-fusion hybrids of citrus and Poncirus. Not sure what else. He's at the University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center.
