those are really beautiful trees you have going there, i'm so jealous, i live where we have snow cold winters and so all i can have are potted trees, and since i just started to grow citrus trees this year i've never had any fresh fruit from my trees yet.
but that won't stop me from continuing to try and grow what i can get my hands on. |

Ned-your citrus is beautiful! I planted a Ponkan this fall and am looking forward to it fruiting.I suspect that you are a bit warmer in Charleston than me.I am impressed with the Navels-I will have to plant one here. _________________

Beautiful trees and fruits Laaz!
Not that I am complaining about those bright colors of orange or yellow, I was planning to have red colored citrus fruits to match the holiday season...
But they become orange first before turning into red colored peel in March. Are there any blood oranges that have a red skin or peel around the holidays up to Valentines? |

Laaz:
Correction. That was Joe's Clemenule. He gave that to me and then I gave you a branch.
Yours is way ahead of me. Mine are just golf ball size this time.
But I think when you taste joe's clemenule, you're going to change your mind which one is the best tasting mandarin.
It won't be long you can harvest them. |

Laaz:
After looking again at your pictures, that ponkan mandarin looks very similar with my Joe's clemenule.
Is there a mistake?
Here's the picture:Heres the picture of Joes clemenule
And here's Joe's clem before the fruit was ripe

Benny no mistake. The Ponkan is much larger than a clem. I think Ponkan is one of the largest of the mandarins. Super sweet ! _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Yes it is true that Ponkan can get as large as grapefruits, at least in my multi-grafted tree. Definitely Ponkan is larger than any clementine, assuming average normal growth for trees in same area. My ponkan fruits are nowhere as good as any of my clementines. The Ponkan can only get as good as owari satsuma, but that is according to my taste buds, and fruit comparisons from my yard. And we know that climate and other factors have great influence on fruit taste quality of citruses, so mileage could vary. Perhaps most parts of the world, ponkan could be the best, but not in my yard. I don't know what is best yet, my preferences changes daily, |

Joe, you are right that location can govern the taste and appearance of citrus fruits and because of my limited experience tasting the best of citrus I can not judge the best tasting but from my limited experience, yours is still the best. I just bought me the California Cutie (Mandarin) at Costco and my wife and my kids were saying that I should buy more because they love them.
I wish they tasted your clem Joe. |
