Has anyone tried rooting cuttings or starting seed in an Aero Garden? I've wanted one of these for a while. I may pull the trigger at some point.

I have an aerogarden and think it is a neat contraption. I am not sure how well it would do for rooting citrus or growing citrus seeds but bet both could be done.

Most aerogarden seed kits are the pre-seeded pod sets but there is a pod set you can buy that includes the pods and nutrients to grow seeds of your choice for a year. If you wanted to grow the seeds hydroponicaly you could get this seed kit: http://www.aerogardenstore.com/promotion/index.php?promoName=catalog&pageName=product&viewProduct=0011-00Z
I would imagine you could use this set and transplant the seedlings when they are big enough but doubt it would be worth the money.

And if you wanted to use it to start seedlings in soil to be transplanted you could use this kit: http://www.aerogardenstore.com/promotion/index.php?promoName=catalog&pageName=product&viewProduct=0069-00Z

I have never used either seed kit for citrus but I would imagine it could be done. I think you'd probably get better use from an aerogarden for specifically herbs and smaller veggies because it is a costly little setup. It'd still be way cheaper to get a T8 or T12 fixture and use plastic party cups. That said I do like the aerogarden for what it is.

If you are set on wanting a hydroponic type setup you might want to check out this website as they have setups that are much bigger for about the same amount of money as some aerogardens: http://www.stealthhydroponics.com/index.php?a=SHH9&gclid=CLX6n_2Tu50CFRQeDQodrzNtjg

I have been considering getting another hydroponic setup to accompany my aerogarden to try and grow some peppers and tomatoes over the winter (not citrus at this point though). I looked at just getting another aerogarden at first but their setups are very costly (especially upkeep) and can become problematic if you want to grow anything over a foot or two tall. I did a litte bit more searching after my last post here and found a couple of nice options that I thought I'd share.

This ebay store has good history as well as prices:
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/The-Hydro-Source__W0QQ_armrsZ1

I am not quite set on any one specific setup yet but have been leaning towards this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/6-Site-Drip-Hydroponic-System-Kit-Flora-Fertilizer_W0QQitemZ200388334187QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2ea813526b

I was also planning on getting this 150 watt high pressure sodium light to go overhead:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sun-System-150W-HPS-High-Pressure-Sodium-Complete-Light_W0QQitemZ120475422536QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0ce50f48

This ebay store does have many different hydro setups and packages so make sure you search through ALL of them as some of the packages have different options (the 150 wat hps light included, number of plant slots, different pumps, some include shipping, some include an airstone, some have double the nutirents, ect.).

I also plan on adding a little more lighting to the setup and found some cheap 65 watt CFLs that appear to be more than sufficient for growing plants and a bargain at $10:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=57889-57299-9166B&lpage=none

I was planning on picking up 4 of those bulbs (2 for the new hydro setup and 2 more for supplemental lighting for my citrus trees) and 4 basic clamp/dome style lights:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=203219-1373-FL-302PDQ&lpage=none
You could obviously go cheaper but I like the bigger hood on this one and could upgrade to a 125 watt CFL with no problems.

So for give or take $180 you can have a decent sized hydro system with a 150 watt HPS light and 130 watts of CFL lighting (2 bulbs and fixtures). I really do not think you neccisarily need that much lighting but I was planning on putting a few other plants on the table with the hydro setup. The aerogarden I have (the 'classic' model) costs about $150, only puts out 50 watts of light and can only grow plants that are no more than a foot or so tall. Just something to take into consideration.

Thanks, I want something for propogation, but also maybe some tomatos and herbs, Basil for sure. I'll have to look into those. The Aero Pro 200 was the model I was looking at, it has an expandable light top.

I think it might be great way too start plants before going outdoors and the annuals can be grown year round.

I'm still curious as to whether these would work to root Citrus cuttings and seeds. Only way is to try!

If you do not have any hydroponic experiance and money is not an issue then I would highly suggest the aerogarden (the newer and bigger promodels make it possible to grow things 2-3 feet tall which is a big plus from the classic model) as it is difficult to mess up. When I pick up the hydro setup from the ebay store I will have to keep everyone posted as to whether it is worth it or not.
