I have a half barrel potter sitting vacant right now, I have two, one has a miracle berry doing well in it(it produces more than I can eat), but I was looking for something self fruiting I could put in it. I am in 9b. I was going to put in a Grumicherya(sure I mangled the spelling) that I have in a 1gal but I think I will plant that in the ground as I think it will do fine. So something that doesn't get too big that I can cover in colder weather, that produces fruit. Any ideas?

No one has any ideas on exotic small, self pollinating, fruiting plants?

Maybe blueberry? I grow blueberries in half barrels. It works nicely if you get the drainage and soil right. They like acid soil so use a lot of peat or add sulphur.

"Many modern varieties like Blueray, Earliblue, Bluecrop, are self-fertile & need only one plant to set fruit. "

I just noticed you're in Florida, not sure how well they do in the hot weather.

We have special low chill cultivars of blue berries here but as far as I am aware they all require a pollinator. Unfortunate because they would have been my first choice as well.

Most of the low-chill southern highbush bluberries are partially self-fertile. It's just that they still benefit from a cross-pollincation - more, larger, and supposedly earlier fruiting. I would say, though, that two blueberry bushes in a half barrel would be fine; together, they would grow to about the same size as a single plant. The only difficulty would be pruning to obtain balance between the two.

Two varieties that have low stature are Sunshineblue and Farthing. Farthing needs about 250-300 chill hours. I'm not sure about Sunshineblue, since it's not grown commercially. Where you are at, you will need to look for very low chill varieties. Varieties commonly grown I-4 and south are Snowchaser, Emerald, and Jewel. If you want the best flavor, plant Sweetcrisp. It isn't a huge producer, but it has the crunchy texture of a seedless grape and is the sweetest variety currently available. Most of these varieties do require pollination to set large quantities of fruit. Emerald will typically set large quantities of parthenocarpic fruit without any other varieties nearby.
