When I brought this tree in last fall, I noticed the soil level was way down & that it probably was root bound again. Yesterday I poured about a qt of water in & it ran right thru, which means soil was too compacted. Today I dumped pot over & pulled tree out. It's my biggest pot - 24 X 18 inches high. Rootbound or what??

Another

I unravelled them & got most of soil off, & cut sometimes 2 feet of roots off. Looked like a pile of spaghetti.
Roots trimmed:

Added more soil mix & CHC's in big pile. Put 4 inches of soil in bottom of pot & lifted it into pot. Even with most soil off, that sucker was HEAVY!!!
Here is a very happy, healthy, well watered & lightly fed palm:

Overall, it is just over 7 ft & I'm sure it will take off now. Even though it's on wheels, I'll leave it at east facing window in sunroom this year. What a mess this was!!! Glad it's over..for a year or 2.

Patty it looks great. I hope you used Superthrive on it Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing .... Canary Date's get massive, once they get to that stage they really take off. I really surprised you didn't have roots coming out every hole on the pot.

Patty, nice looking palm. I have a Canary Island Date Palm (CIDP) that is now 3 years old. As Laaz said, one problem with CIDP is their size. The height is not a problem, but the width of mine is at least 6 feet wide, therefore it take up a lot of greenhouse space. Also, the fronds are very sharp and can easily stab you if you aren't careful. I feed mine with Osmocote slow release fertilizer. Patty, if you use an air root pruning container the tree roots will not circle around and around at the bottom of the container. - Millet

Laaz, the roots were poking out of the drain holes. I put pieces of pantyhose covering all holes to keep bugs from crawling in, & the roots poked thru them LOL. NO SUPERTHRIVE!!
I bought this & fan palm in TX when I was w/ my Mom in '99. They were both in small pots & sat on table (I shipped them home). They mean a lot to me, as that was the last time I saw my Mom. She thought I was nuts buying palm trees & shipping them here LOL.
THORNS? Look at third pic where the green is-- those are big sharp thorns!
Thanks Millet, I read about those root pruning containers, but don't understand how they work! I should buy a couple for the palms if they come in that size.

What a beautiful Palm Patty! I so love those trees, any kind of Palm, but I have limited space so.... guess I will have to get some small ones and just let them grow into my place, I always seem to make room for what I get!!! Very Happy
