I know this is a mostly citrus and fruits board, but I thought some of you might enjoy this picuture of our old yellow clivia. This is a plant purchased at a plant sale for $2.00 many years ago.

Hi Ned. I hope you made it through the storm tonight OK. We had gusts here of 85 MPH so the weather channel said. Looks like it's pushing offshore now.

Lazz, we got a much needed downpour but nothing like 85 MPH winds. Thank goodness, I would be standing nursery plants up half the day! LOL I am sure I will be standing some up anyway.

Just did a survey, nothing broken... Quite a bit of wind burn but all the fruit is still on the trees. We have major power outages all over the area. Will have to do a better survey in the morning. |

Hey Ned, I just looked at the pics of brugs you posted & I mentioned some cuttings I got in mail today. Well, today was like christmas! My buddy Citrus Joe sent me clivia fruits/seeds just today too! (and more). Was going to google & look them up but now I don't have to LOL. Beautiful, healthy looking plant. He sent me red/orange. So glad you posted that.
Hope all your plants survived the storm Laaz, & all of you way over there! _________________ Patty

Patty, I bet Joe grows them as a landscape plant!
Justjoan they are not seen as often here as the orange-red one. We got 2 of these plants, about 15 years ago, at the Park Seed end-of-season sale. We use to go there every year, but it got to be such a crowd until I believe they stopped having it. The clivia were in 2 gallon pots, and listed in the catalog for something over $200 each. I couldn't believe it when I saw the two of them them sitting there - no one seemed to notice them until after we had latched on to them, then everyone wanted to know where we got them. I am sure the staff had no idea what they were.

Just did a search on Clivia & the yellow is more rare. It takes 3-4 years to bloom & they don't like a lot of sun -grows well under trees. Good reading ... they never showed a pic but, that's OK..I see Ned's! _________________ Patty

Patty, I believe I have read 3-4 years from seed also. Once they get big, you can sometimes take an offshoot and start one that way.
The one in the picture is in a 14" pot. It was potted up this year, but they can stay in the same pot for years. They like to be potbound. Easy on the fertilizer, and avoid overwatering, especially during winter (much like a citrus). Avoid direct sun and freezing conditions.
Here is a site I stumbled across that might be of interest: http://www.americancliviasociety.org/
