In the last few days I noticed my Banana (Musa Basjoo) starting to develop a bulb type formation at about the 8.5' (3 metres) level. The plant has been in the ground for about 2 1/2 years. How many bananas usually develop on this variety? I have never seen this before and look forward watching and documenting the progress. I understand that the fruit in inedible...has any one tried eating a banana from this variety? Is this (flowering) common in cool climates?
Greg

The quantity of bananas the plant produces depends on how happy the plant is. Basjoo produces small inedible fruit with seeds. Basjoo's seed is very easy to germinate and grows readily. - Millet

Millet, the entire plant grows readily. If not kept in check they will take over like bamboo. Smile I unload about 6 or 8 shoots every year. The tops of the plants are around 16' tall. I didn't know about the seeds. Thats good to know. Do you have any Musas growing in your greenhouse?

Thanks,G.

BTW, I have some Filipino friends that really like cooking with the leaves.

Try growing dwarf brazilian and california gold. If it were not very strict, I would be bringing you some pups. Anyway, I will be around Surrey, BC sometime in the third week of August visiting my Aunt and cousins. Surely nice to have a look see at your setup over there.

Greg, yes I have a Grand Nain (Chiquita), and a William's Hybrid, growing in the greenhouse. Outside next to the patio is a red leafed Sebrina . - Millet
