I looked into this quite a bit a while back. There was a guy who drank 2 gallons of grapefruit juice and had a bad interaction. In my opinion it is being a little too cautious to ban ban grapefruit and taking statins. When the grapefruit start to get good in my backyard, I drink the occasional glass. When I get a slug of fruit, I stop taking the statin for a month. Apparently the impact of the statins hangs around a while after they are stopped. I'm taking the statin as my cholesterol was 200, the old maximum. Some time ago the max was reduced again such that almost no one can meet it without taking statins. Hmm, you suppose the drug companies had anything to do with that? Phi on them, my statin is a generic costing $8 a month from Walmart.

The misses has to watch herself imbibing Grapefruit juice with her anti-hypertensive medication. The juice has a “potentiating” effect meaning that the juice can lower her blood pressure even more than by taking the medication alone. Of course the question I asked was, does this pertain to all Citrus juice and her answer was no. (She is a licensed CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse) and worked in Eval (Emergency Room) at the VA Hospital in Fresno for 30 years.)

I take 2 grams of Grapefruit pectin every day in the morning along with 1 gram of Vitamin C. For me the Grapefruit was advised to me by my GP Doctor years ago as a diuretic. I personally do not fathom a problem with Grapefruit juice or pectin in conjunction with the statin medicines. I would think that a natural diuretic would be helpful to help flush the system faster, allowing for a quicker sloughing off of the chemical impurities build up in the system and further aid the flushing out of the by product breakdown of the LDL inhibiting cholesterol medicines. Some people can drink two gallons of water and have an adverse reaction so I don't think that having one reaction due to too much Grapefruit juice was the problem . Something else went wrong in the system that perpetuated the adverse effect and yes, a heavy metal "in the mix" can do it for some people.
