Jose, I'm really very much a beginner when it comes to avocados, so I can't give you much info. My understanding is that Hass is not very cold tolerant, so it would not be my choice as a rootstock for anything I really wanted to keep. I planted some grocery store seeds just to experiment with grafting, but I don't think they would be suitable for growing long-term in my climate. However, you can certainly plant avocado seeds directly in the ground, a pot, or germinate them in a glass of water. I've had them sprout from seeds I tossed out with kitchen scraps as mulch under my persimmon tree, so they're pretty easy to get started. I don't know what season would be best for grafting.

FYI--there is an avocado that will grow in zone 8/9 without protection! I got a scion from Dr. Manners from a variety named Mrs. Holland that was suppose to be cold hard--it got a good test last winter--at least 4 cold spells below 23/24 F--with no protection. It came thru with no damage at all--and this is a very vigorous grower as well--over 10 ft in just 3 yr from a simple bud graft!

Following the discussion about cold hardy avacados. I have sooo many questons. Zone 8b Miss gulf coast.
1. Did anyone ever root a Mrs. holland cutting? Anyone care to share graftwood?
2. found pictures of Ms. holland fruit- is it a mexican variety? doesn't look like a Hss.
3. If I plant seed from mexican varity from the market (i.e Hasstype) - is that the most cold hardy seedling available?
4. Is there a place to buy mexican type avacado stock for grafting?
5. Are there other good cold hardy varities?
Thanks,
Jose

Thanks for the responses...
So, it appears the best way to get a truly cold hardy avacado plant is to buy a plant like Joey or others advertised. Is Mrs Holland available from a nursery? Assuming such a tree produces fruit. will the seeds also produce similar cold hardy plants?
Thanks
Jose
