Under what criteria do they accept and or seek new varieties for the collection? There seems to be a lot of European varieties that they do not have, but would great additions to the collection. There are also varieties that I've seen state side that they don't have or list including the Panzarella varieties like the Raspberry Tangor. Heck, the variegated varieties Lazz has also come to mind. Has anyone on the board approached them with a variety to see if they were interested? |

Mark,
I replied to your PM about the red clementine but each time I tried to send it I got an error message in return. I'm not sure you received the reply...

Raspberry Tangor is a loser. It never gets sweet. Panzatella orange is a loser, it is excessively watery. I topworked my Panzarella orange to pummelo and cocktail graepfruit this year after the first big year of fruit. |

One of the varieties you may be interested in is the "Tacle" (Tarocco orange x Clementine), which might be what my red clementine tree is (the variety wasn't labeled on my tree, just "red clementine").
Edit : But then my tree may not be a "tacle", as the data sheet on the anfic web site states that the tacle is thorny. My plant definitely isn't thorny.
My plant definitely produces anthocyanins in the fruit though. When I bought the plant, I picked a fruit of one of the other plants available (mine didn't have any). This fruit clearly had red streaks in the pulp.
See also here:

...and here:

An image of the Tacle, although this doesn't show any anthocyanin coloring...

Concerning the Citrus Variety Collection at UCR. I have been to the variety collection, and the adjacent CCPP, but do not fully understand the criteria for how new varieties of citrus are selected, or added to the collection. However, there is no, or very little, unused space available for the addition of more new varieties, as all the space is pretty much filled up. Also, recently there has been some discussion at UCR to even reduce the Variety Collection, by taking land now used by the Variety Collection, to erect more buildings for additional class rooms, dormitories and research facilities. - (904-) |
