Every year I plant a few citrus seedlings. Just for fun, because I really don't have any more room in my winter-heated greenhouse.
In the past couple of years, I have noticed that seed from the Australian hybrid known as 'Blood Lime' or 'Red Centre Lime' produces quite variable seedlings - noticeably different leaf shape, thorniness and general vigour.
This year's seeds were planted in a 4" pot mid-February in a heated propagator. They are still only around 1" (2.5cms) tall but again are quite variable.
I'm trying not to get excited by the seedling at the top right, which is shown enlarged and in close-up below.
The first pair of leaves was normal although a bit rounder than usual.
One of the second pair had a couple of lighter marks, which I thought nothing of.
The third pair of leaves definitely shows variegation.
Finally the leaf now unfurling shows that typical edge distortion and curling of many variegated citrus leaves.
It's very early days, but I hope this may become the first variegated Microcitrus variety. Fingers crossed!
