Phil,

Make sure you are proficient with your firearm before you take that walk.

Make sure you can take a life.

Make sure you are justified.

Don't pull your weapon to defuse a situation especially if there are more than one perp.

Don't make it your goal but a measure of last resort.

When you get to that point do what you need to do and do it quickly. Hesitation and indecision will kill you.

Then call 911 so medical aid and the police can get there.

I hope you never need to use any of this advice.

Last advice

I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by six.

You are correct. Perhaps the hoodlum has a firearm as well. I will be much more cautious about how I do my walking in the future.

I want my next 911 call to be me calling to report a dead mugger, not a mugging. Oh, I can empty the magazine into a mugger no problem. If I pull a gun on a mugger it is to kill them, not scare them off. Your perspective changes after being a personal crime victim.

Ironically, talking about crime, the video at the link below of a police officer being shot just happened last weekend not too far away. Dave who is interviewed in the video goes to my church. The video is just amazing and shows the risks that police officers face every day.

Just an idea.. I read an e-mail that keeping wasp spray for attackers is a good idea.. unlike capsasin spray it has longer distance so you don't have to be as close to do damage to an intruder.. and it can be as effective.. I have no proven facts about it.. but it sounds like a good idea..
