Does anyone have any tips for peeling the coat off of citrus seed? (Yes Joe I've gone from scarifing my babies to removing their coats so they can get big and strong even faster ).
Anyway, I thought that soaking them for 24 hours may help, but if anyone has a special technique or tools that they use, I'd be interested in your advice.
Thanks,
Phillip |

I soak them for a couple hours if dry, if fresh you can strip them right away.I use my fingers. Just pinch off a tiny bit at pointy end of seed, then use my finger nails to peel remainder off seed coating. Be gentle!. Then I plant right away so seed doesn't dry out. I have seeds,Kumquat & F.D.,that I planted 3 days ago that are already starting to sprout , & more do sprout using this method. I use a styrafoam egg incubator, which keeps seeds at 87 deg. & 80% humidity. I hope this helps. I dont have much patience either. Dennis |

This is how I peeled my seeds:
I took a serrated steak knife and holding it by the blade, I inserted the end of the knife into the pointy end of the seed. It seemed to split pretty easy. I then lifted one side of the little flap that was created by splitting it and then grasping it between my finger and the end of the knife I could easily peel it back.
It only took a minute to do the seven seeds. I had just finished eating the fruit, so seeds were fresh. I tore off a paper towel and placed the seeds on it and then folding over the paper towel onto the seeds, I rubbed them in a circular motion about 4-5 times to get the sticky slick gel off of them so I could hold them, and then proceeded to peel them.
I may have gotten the cart before the horse, but I think you can get the gist of it. _________________ A small piece of land with fruit trees and a garden allows one to live as kings and queens in times of trouble. |

Thanks citrusgalore.
Unfortunately, I will deal with 15000 seeds so a chemical method will help better |

oh my goodness meyerlemon, I didn't mean to infer that my method would do for a chemical peel...lol....I was answering dauben's question.
15000 seeds,....yep, you definitely need a different method!
Just curious, did you find a chemical that would do the job? What about treating them with GA3 to induce faster germination? I haven't done a search, so don't know if it works with citrus. _________________ A small piece of land with fruit trees and a garden allows one to live as kings and queens in times of trouble. |

I just use my fingernail, and snap off the very tip of the pointed end, then peel off both sides. There must be a very fast method, because all of the commercial citrus seed in Brazil (the world largest citrus producers) are planted as peeled seed.

No I haven't found a chemical solution, tough we sow all the seeds today.
My father-in-law told me that once he used sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to peel cotton seeds, this was my starting point.
We sow 10000 volkameriana seeds and 4000 carrizo seeds.Unfortunately, when I get the carrizo seeds from the refrigerator, I noticed that they got moldy a little bit and had black stains on them |
