Hi, i wanted to have my lime tree from seed, so i bought three limes (i don't know what variety they were exactly); i opened them to look for seeds (and i made a couple of cocktails Razz ) but i almost found no seeds...just one very little seed (it looked like a little but developed seed) in one of them. Now i have two theories about that seed: it can be sterile, just an "error" on a seedless variety, or it can be a monoembryonic seed. What do you think?! Anyway, i sowed it...i'll see what happens!

PS: the lime looked like the classic bar-tender lime, more or less the size of an egg

I'd guess it was a Persian lime, you're very lucky to find a seed in one. They do not grow true to type. I hope the seed germinates and gives you something interesting. If you want some Key lime seeds there are plenty on eBay for cheap, I got some from there.

Watch out for the source of seeds on eBay. Don't buy from anywhere that Citrus Greening is. I'd avoid Asia altogether for anything plant related. I'm not sure if Japan is safe or not.

We can't import any outside seed here, not sure about Europe's laws, but still Citrus Greening is something to be aware of regardless.

Thanks for the warning Mark_T. Is citrus greening transmitted via seeds?

Thanks, in effect it should be the Persian (or Tahiti) lime, that is usually known to be seedless. I hope to see a little tree but i know i'll have to be VERY lucky...the seed is too small in my opinion.

Does the key lime grow well in temperate climate? In effect i think i should buy from e-bay since i think we don't have them in shops here in Italy
But i dont't want to "import" the greening desease in here!!!

Italy does have a Citrus industry, so I'd imagine they do have some laws on seed import. Of course, I'm not sure what anyone can do about fruit in the stores. Brazil has the disease and ships fruit everywhere. Someone else probably needs to chime in. I'm sure someone has fresh key limes available in stores somewhere in your location. That's probably a safer bet than eBay and the seed will be better. The eBay stuff is likely dried out.

Folks,
I may be totally wrong but I recall reading that greening is not transmitted via seeds. Of course, it is better to be safe than sorry though.

Good luck!

http://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2010/04/06/2010-7736/citrus-seed-imports-citrus-greening-and-citrus-variegated-chlorosis

"Emerging evidence suggests that propagative seed of genera that are hosts of citrus greening or CVC can transmit these diseases. First, when seedlings are generated from seed that is taken from plants infected with citrus greening, a small percentage of those seedlings have been found to be infected with citrus greening. "

I know that the USDA will actually track down and confiscate seed bought from Asian sources, eBay included and destroy any seedlings from the seeds. I think the odds are small, but anyone in a citrus producing location, should be very cautious.

Indeed you have limes in Italy! You have many nursery there. Look and you will find grafted plants easily. If you don't, send me a PM.
