I'm not sure how many of you who frequent this board are familiar with the name " Sherwood Akin". Mr Akin who lived in Sibley, Louisiana was probaby one of the premier cold hardy citrus pioneers. He not only dabbled in citrus but developed new varieties of mayhaw and other fruits. I think there are even a few flowering shrubs named in his honor. Sherwood passed away on Sept 23rd succumbing to a very fast form of leukemia. He was 89. Ive decided that being a "citraholic" is good for longevity!

I never actually met Sherwood Akin, but I have talked to Mr. Akin on the telephone concerning citrus. Sherwood, was preceded in death by his wife. He certainly was a well know figure in cold hardy citrus. - Millet

I was deeply saddened to hear of Sherwood's passing. I knew him well and visited often. He had a wealth of knowledge about many plants, not just citrus. He was an avid fruit grower. Sherwood had a great sense of humor and many stories to share from his long life. I believe he was 89. I last saw him around July 1st. He will be missed by many.
