With the exception of those devilish tree-rats, I love seeing wildlife in my tiny back yard. After a July vacation, I came home to see this little guy gamboling about on my pot shelf. I figured once I was home he would take off for quieter pastures, but yesterday I was out puttering around and heard him singing. He's only about an inch long, and he's sitting in a saucer full of water holding a tree-fern-trunk container.

I have quite a few frogs living in my 32' X 70' greenhouse. I never kill frogs nor spiders, as they are very good at eating greenhouse pests. - Millet 1,211-)

I'm so jealous! I've had toads here for years, but generally it's too dry for frogs in much of California. I dream of the day I have room for a greenhouse. In the mean time, a saucer of water is the best I can do for the little guys.

fofoca, the ones in my greenhouse are actually probably toads. In the farm fields around here there are millions of them. They remain under the earth until it rains, then they come up, and at night you can hear them crooking all night by the thousands. When digging with a shovel, one often digs them up. Millet (1,211-)

fofoca,
Greenhouses are manufactured eco systems. They are ideal for many frogs and toads. If you have an automatic watering system even better.
You can order some frogs from www.kingsnake.com . They will live quite nicely if you green house and give you a song from time to time for your enjoyment. I like the Barking Tree Frogs and Gray Tree Frogs along with others.
Some things to consider before ordering a frog.
1. Use native species or in colder areas a tropical species that would not take over if it escaped. 6 cane toads were brought to AU to help with the sugarcane beetles. Now the Cane toads have taken over.
2. Frogs respond to other frogs of their species. The chorus between a group of the same species would be preferred over one frog from several species.
3. Tree frogs can be very loud. The little green tree frogs we have here are only an inch long but it sound can be deafening in an enclosed area.

Thanks, Terry, I'll keep that in mind when I get my wished-for greenhouse. I have to admit that I have always wanted to have geckos in there too...

Funny that you mention toads. I just caught a huge Western Toad last week to take to my wife's AWANA class. It was a big hit with the kids. I also caught a smaller frog and kept it in the same aquarium as the toad, but he wasn't there the next morning. Could have been dinner for the toad.

For toads and frogs the rule is:
If it will fit into its mouth it's food.

Yes, I hope so too. I haven't seen him since (I've been looking), but once I heard a bit of singing. I guess he doesn't pop his head up very often. It would be really great to have some tadpoles show up in my waterlily pot, but that may be too much to ask for.
