there's a citrus grove in Southern California that is endangered of being going extinct by losing out to developers. It is called the Inland Empire of California near Riverside. They grow the best oranges in the world, and I bet their tangerines would even be better. The rinds are the thinnest you ever saw.
But the citrus industry is at the mercy of global markets, like WalMart, which buys oranges with the cheapest price, as long as it is colored orange and looks like orange, they will buy the cheapest ones, from Australia, Brazil, South Africa and elsewhere cheaper, AND CARE NOTHING about the taste.
The distinctiveness of oranges from the Inland Empire has been lost and branded over with global sellers, making it hard for the Inland Empire citrus growers to compete in the global market, meanwhile, developers are enticing them with hefty sums of retirement money, and the best citrus groves in the world are rapidly disappearing...
There is some glimmer of hope, by catering to the niche markets, very few citrus growers, fanatics just like us are holding on and selling and branding it as their unique oranges. Will have to buy me a box from them someday, even if costs an arm and a leg.
This was an article featured in Sunset Magazine recently, and I hope I remember some of the points correctly.
