Hi Patty, I grew Datura outside the year before last. Be careful of Datura , it is very invasive. The following year I must have had over 300 young seedling plants throughout my flower beds. In many areas it is illegal to plant. I have three Burgmansea plants, a 10 foot pink, a 7 foot yellow and a small 3 foot pink and white. The pink tree I got from Citrus Joe. - Millet

Thanks Millet
Datura seeds survived your winter!!!???
Mind if I pick your brain a little? Were the Dats as big as Brugs? Do they have strong fragrance like Brugs? 10 ft HIGH!!...is it in a pot & how big is pot? Guess patience is a virtue here - I should just wait & see.
They are both very toxic & get a bad rap (esp. in Fl). They were/are used for medicinal purposes but some idiots think if they eat them, they will get healthier or get high. One kid in Fl. made tea out of leaves & flowers & drank it only to end up in E room. Several of them report that they thought they were on fire.
We have many plants that are toxic such as poinsettias, oleander, tomato leaves & many many more. Just don't EAT them.

I have a lot of brugs, here are a few pictures. The pictures were taken a couple of years ago. The plants did not even freeze back this year - it will be interesting to see how they turn out.

Hi Ned, thanks for posting that . Those are beautiful. ..could that 1st one be a Dr. Seuss? I hear the pinks are more fragrant than most.
I just got 4 more nice cuttings today- one already rooted, from countryhillsgardens to replace 5 cuttings that died. Great people to deal with. I'll get flowers from about all this year & take cuttings in fall. If you want some rooted ones next spring you know I'll send some:)
I have a nice assortment of beauties: Dr. Seuss, Tiara, Georgia Peach, KBS, Creamsickle, Butterfly, Rosamond & Isabella. All but 3 have roots. Here's links to ABAD & the nursery I bought from with great pics of them.
http://www.countryhillgardens.com/ good pics of what I have

Patty, I don't think Datura's have a fragrance. I could be wrong, but I never smelled any fragrance from them. Burgmansia is called the Angel's plant because the flowers look (point) down, as from heaven, and Datura is called the Devil's plant because they look (point) up as from you know where. The Burgmansia's fragrance actually comes on at night. Both Burmansias are in a 15 gallon pots, and are 3 years old. They look EXACTLY like the pictures that Ned posted. Even though Burgmansia is poisonous to humans, evidently they are not poisonous to spider mites. I constantly have to fight spider mites on them constantly!! - Millet

Hi Patty,

How are your Brugs? Do you keep them outside or bring them in for winter. I have a small 'Double Lavender Angel Trumpet' that I actually think is a datura, that I ordered from this site:
http://www.4seasonsnurseries.com/detail.asp?nav=&pid=7457

It is in a small pot and I wondered whether to bring it inside or keep it in my unheated garage next to my figs. Do they need a dormant time or can I attempt to grow them actively with a greenhouse over winter?

In my opinion brugmansia is among the easiest of all plants to grow. You can hack them down and they jump right back up. I used to grow datura in the greenhouse and in the garden, but they are tremendously invasive. Even in the garden. Daturas are on the do not plant list in some western states due to their invasiveness, and toxicity.

Millet is right, brugs are easy to grow and very rewarding. As for daturas, I find that the double ones are not invasive here, though there are certainly some that are serious pest here in the South.

This Sunday I saw a very impressive Brugmansia named 'Super Nova' at Just Fruits and Exotics in Medart,FL- you would have to be there in person to appreciate its grand size-it is certainly the largest Brugs that I have seen to date.

Last year was my first year for Dats & Brugs & I do not care for Dats.
Millet, you are right about Dats not having a fragrance, so I didn't grow any this year except a few seeds sprouted from last year so I can see how they could become invasive.
Chops, Datura flowers face upward & Brugmansias hang down. Most people collect seeds from Dats & treat them as annuals.
Last winter I put brugs in basement --yes, you could put them with the sleeping figs!
This year, I planted one inground on west side of house & it is 9-10 feet tall now & had 4-5 flushes of flowers - onetime I counted 40 blooms!!!
Another, I cut big holes in sides of 5 gal bucket & planted that -- it was OK. The others I kept in pots, & the bigger the pot, the bigger the plant. Right now they are all in sunroom going dormant (even one I planted inground & dug up) except for 3 that are finishing blooming. I only give them enough water to barely keep moist letting soil dry out during winter, & NO ferts since early Sept.
No room in basement for them, so they will stay in Sun room at north wall & be semi dormant with very little direct sun.
Ned, that pic showed some beauties! I think I saw that garden once before but the brugs are much bigger w/ more flowers this time.
Next spring I will plant more inground...it was worth it!
