I have struggled a little bit with the provision of heat for my citrus containers in the winter. Someone gave me the idea of a farrowing heat mat. I googled around a little bit, and I found this 13" x 60" mat for $108 dollars without the thermostat. http://www.vittetoeinc.com/catalog/accessories.htm#Heat%20Mats

Now I don't know about this brand specifically, but I've been told that farrowing heat mats are waterproof and long-lasting.

Would such a heat source work for container citrus? Thanks.

Robert, basically, the farrow mat is 1-ft. wide and 5-ft long for $108.00 plus you have to purchase the thermostate. It would probably work fine, as you will only need to heat the container's soil to 64F to prevent WLD, 70F if you wish additional growth during the winter months. I don't know how many trees you have, but you probably could only place three trees on a mat that size. I use the thin, but very strong, plastic heating rolls, maybe 1/16 inch thick, that are waterproof. They come either 12 or 18 inches wide and in 10-foot and 20-foot lengths. Four heat rolls can be plugged into a single thermostate. The temperature can be regulated between 40F to 100F. During the winter I set the temperature to keep the containers at 64F - 70F degrees. I also have two citrus trees planted in the ground (in the greenhouse) on raised beds. My intention for the ground trees is to get 5 flushes per year, thus getting the trees to a good size quickly. I planted them on December 18, 2005 and as of today after 6 months in the ground, they are on their third flush, therefore I believe that I will attain 5 (or more) flushes this year, as I still have 6 months left. During the fall and winter months, I keep the ground soil at 70F at all times using the heating rolls, and also put a halide lamp on them from sun set until 10:00PM. When the lights are on, the trees have aluminized light reflectors on four sides, so all parts of the foliage receives the full light spectrum. I also remove all blooms from the two trees for the first 2 years. By this method I believe I will get 5+ years growth in 2 years. I don't remember what I paid for the rolls, but if your interested I will look up the invoices. I purchased three 20-foot rools, and five 10-foot rolls, plus two thermostates. The heating rolls have now been used for 4 years, and are still in pretty fair condition. I just roll them out and set the trees on top of them. I have had absolutely no WLD at all since using them to heat the containers. - Millet

Yes, Millet, I would be interested in your source; from there I could get the current price, then compare. I vaguely remember that source being somewhere in Denver.
