The funny thing is that electricity generation puts more mercury into the environment than CFL bulbs ever could. Reducing electricity demand reduces mercury in the environment.

Personally, I see CFLs as the crossover between incandescent and LEDs, as soon as LED lamps come down in pricing I imagine CFLs will loose market share.

 Ditto.
Sooner that happens - the better.

				| Imagine how much energy we could save if night lights were banned. I'm not being ridiculous here I'm talking about having outside lighting just because you are afraid of the boogieman. Most people never have a clue what is in the night sky due to all the light polution. One of the fringe benefits of a hurricane power outage is you can see the sky. Of course some idiots would swear it is alien eyes starring at them.
Anyway do we really need lights along the interstate when we have them on our cars?

Do you really think your cat or dog needs the light to see how to pee?

Are you sure that monster is lurking in the bushes waiting for you to take out the garbage and do you really think the itty bitty light is going to scare him off.

Do you actually think the lights deter burglars or is it the lack of thick vegatation near your entrances and windows. Most likely the light just helps the burglar to see which means he has to use a secondary source of light if you don't provide it for him. Somehow I think a flashlight bobbing around in the yard is going to draw more attention than a burglary scurring around in the shadows.

 Just my thoughts.

Long live the dark!!!!!!!!!! So sayeth Darkman!

Sorry had to throw that in.

				| You said exactly what I have been saying for years. Motion detectors on lights are effective and save energy and scare the crap out of buglers. But night lights that stay on all night are a waste. _________________

Just think in a few years with trickle down military technology we'll be able to get a motion activated lazer tracking device. Imagine the burglar that looks down and sees that cherry red lazer on his chest. He won't hang around.

 Turtleman,

 You ain't right!

 Hey I like that!!

I've seen those Boogiewomen too and they are a very dangerous lot.

Turtleman doesn't have gators that like to wander around at night.

Very true. But personally I don't like that kind of lights. I hate it that when I walk the dog late in the evening, a light switches on at every doorstep the moment I pass it...

 Hmmmm!!!!!!!! feeling guilty about something?

Yep I feel the same way. A considerate person would not let the beams intrude beyond their boundaries.
