I was at a nursery in Robertsdale Alabama and saw an orange labeled "LA Sweet". The proprietor did not know what the rootstock was and it wasn't labeled. All he knew was it came from Louisiana. I tried a search for it but didn't really find anything.

Any ideas what this is?

It can mean either the Louisiana Sweet Orange, or possibly Louisiana Early Satsuma. You can purchase both here. (365 - JUST ONE YEAR TO GO - ABO)

Thanks,

My Mother in law said she wanted an "Orange" tree. That one should be ok. They had Washington, Owari and LA Sweet. the LA looked much healthier and the Washington will not work here. She only lives thirty minutes from me but across the state line so I can't make the purchase here.

Thanks again,

You should consider cara cara navel. I have one here in Beaumont,TX which is the same climate as yours and it is the best fruit I grow. Everyone who tastes the fruit wants a tree. Low acid, very sweet, seedless and the best thing is very good color that doesn't need cold weather to develop.

Hamlin has lots of seeds if that matters to you.

We have cold temperatures before it is in season.

It's kinda a tricky situation here. Due to a medical condition she will not see the spring bloom but I still wanted to get something that would reasonably work. The three I mentioned earlier were all he had available and he is the only nursery nearby. I had to move quickly.

It's a nice looking tree. She will like it.

PS I have two Cara Cara and a Hamlin. I hope to get some fruit from the CC next year. The Hamlin was good this year. Skeet brought me some Moro and Ponkon Friday. The Moro was intensely color and had great flavor. Very unique taste. The Ponkon was low acid but enough and very sweet. Peeled very cleanly and easily.

Charles I grow Washington navel here, haven't had any problems. They ripen in early Dec through Christmas.
