I have always enjoyed growing Avocado's from seeds, In the past, I would peel off the the brown outside casing, place the seed in wet paper toweling place it in zip lock bag an put it in a dark warm place for about a month

This year I just placed the seed in a small container of dirt without bottom heat. an placed it in the greenhouse It took about four months to germinate

I had read someplace that an Avocado seed placed in dirt would be a much stronger plant than the one's in a zip lock bag, as it gets a little bigger I will repot in chc/peat an hopefully I will be able to post some photo's this Spring

This is my first Avocado seed in a dirt mix an after four months of waiting I guess I'm just happy Very Happy Dale

Maybe it's a southern thing, but I grew up doing it with the seed suspended with toothpicks in a glass of water. I remember my mom doing it when I was just a pup and I have one now in a pot that she germinated this way. I'm not sure how long it took to sprout, weeks definitely, months possibly.

I also lived in a house in Clearwater, FL about 15 years ago that was shaded by an enormous avocado tree. I mean this thing was maybe 40-50 feet tall! The dang tree was so heavily fruited we had dents in our cars and had to be careful walking in the yard. Surprised

All the Avacado I've ever grown, I've started in gallon pots in soil. The seeds where half way buried and all have germinated with average watering.

Cheers, Barrie.

When commercial nurseries plant them (for rootstocks), they plant in soil, with the top of the seed barely showing above the soil surface. Germination takes 2-6 weeks, depending on soil temperature. Seed should not be dried out before planting, or your germination rate will fall dramatically. Some people remove the seed coat (the papery layer) but it really isn't necessary. There may be some advantage in slicing a bit of the top of the seed off, in case one cotyledon curls over the other, which could result in a crooked seedling.
